Before you begin the outline for your dissertation, you must first choose a general thesis topic and start doing research. (Just a little tidbit of help: when choosing your topic make sure it is a topic that significant information can be found regarding it. Selecting a topic and then discovering there is little to no information available about it is not a great start). There are certain things that want you literature review have in it.

  • You want to fine-tune the research problem and make sure that it is something fresh and new.
  • You want to examine different analyses of the work that hasn’t been done before.
  • You don’t want to be counterproductive with your review.
  • You want to so that you have insight to the method of the review.
  • You need to find new suggestions for additional research.
  • You need to find out what has been done and how you can elaborate on that and show the audience a different way of looking at it.
  • Make sure all of your results are important to the dissertation.

Now that you know what needs to be in it, where do you start? Here are some suggestions to keep in mind as you start:

  • Take advantage of librarians
  • Find out what databases apply
  • Search efficiently
  • Record citations well
  • Make sure to have backup copies of everything
  • Use detailed descriptions of citations
  • Get books with names of major researchers in that field
  • Read articles written by people in that field. The authors with more written are often better.
  • Use all of this to make a review.
  • Pick the most important papers.
  • The titles should be most pertinent to your field of study.
  • Start with the newest.
  • Use this information to increase your outline.
